Angry Protesters Storm Parliament Over Controversial Tax Hike

Hundreds of protesters broke through police barricades and stormed the Kenyan Parliament on Tuesday. The protest, fueled by widespread outrage over contentious tax hike proposals, escalated into a violent confrontation with law enforcement, leaving several dead and many injured.

The demonstrations, which have been ongoing for the past week, reached a boiling point as lawmakers debated and ultimately passed the highly controversial Bill. The proposed tax hikes have been met with fierce opposition from citizens who argue that the increases will further strain an already struggling population.

According to Amnesty International Kenya, police fired live rounds in an attempt to control the defiant mob. "Many" people were injured in the chaos, with several fatalities reported by journalists on the scene. The exact number of those shot dead has not yet been confirmed.

In addition to the violence outside, a section of the parliamentary complex housing offices was set ablaze as protesters forced their way inside, with gunfire echoing through the buildings. The scene was described as one of utter chaos and desperation.

Amnesty International Kenya condemned the police response, calling for an immediate investigation into the use of live ammunition against unarmed protesters. "The excessive force used by police is unacceptable and must be thoroughly investigated," a spokesperson said.

The tax hike proposals have sparked significant public outcry, with critics arguing that the measures will disproportionately impact low-income households. Protesters have been adamant in their demands for the government to reconsider the Bill, which they believe will exacerbate economic hardships.

Despite the violent crackdown, the determination of the protesters remains unshaken. "We will not be silenced," one demonstrator shouted as he retreated from the police gunfire. "This Bill is a death sentence for many of us."

As the situation continues to unfold, the government faces mounting pressure to address the grievances of its citizens and to ensure that such a tragic confrontation does not repeat itself. The eyes of the nation and the world are now firmly fixed on Nairobi, waiting to see how the authorities will respond to this unprecedented challenge.
