In a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings, an arrest warrant has been issued against businessman Yagnesh Devani for his failure to appear in court regarding a 1.5 billion fraud case. The case, which was scheduled for mention on Tuesday, saw Devani's absence prompting the prosecution to seek a bail warrant of arrest against him.
Magistrate Robinson Ondieki issued the warrant of arrest following Devani's non-appearance in court. Last month, Devani faced charges of stealing 318.656 metric tonnes of jet fuel valued at Ksh.1.5 billion, which was reportedly owned by the Kenya Commercial Bank.

This recent legal action adds to Devani's existing legal woes. He was previously charged in a separate case along with four others for allegedly conspiring to defraud Kenya Commercial Bank of Ksh.1.9 billion through Triton Petroleum Company. However, in that instance, the court ruled that the prosecution had failed to substantiate the fraud allegations against Devani, Mahindra Pathak, Julius Kilonzo, Collins Otieno Benedict Mutua, and Triton Petroleum Company.
The five individuals were accused of conspiring to defraud KCB by fraudulently discounting Triton Petroleum's invoices amounting to Ksh 1.9 billion, exceeding the approved limit set by KCB's board of directors. Notably, the transactions occurred despite no oil being sold by Triton at the time.
Devani, the primary accused in the previous case, remained elusive throughout the proceedings, further complicating the legal proceedings.
The issuance of the arrest warrant underscores the gravity of the allegations against Devani and highlights the legal authorities' determination to pursue justice in cases of financial fraud.
