Arsenal kicked off their Premier League campaign with a commanding 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium, continuing their strong pre-season form. The Gunners, fresh from two consecutive victories, showed their intent to challenge for the title this season.
Despite entering the match as underdogs, Wolves created the first real opportunity, with Matt Doherty's goalbound shot well-blocked by Gabriel. Arsenal quickly took control, with Ben White and Bukayo Saka testing Wolves' defense. Saka’s persistence paid off as his cross led to Kai Havertz scoring the opening goal, marking a successful league debut for the German forward.
Arsenal missed several chances to double their lead before halftime, and Wolves nearly capitalized when David Raya made a crucial save from Jørgen Strand Larsen’s header. The second half saw Arsenal continue to dominate, with Thomas Partey and Havertz coming close to scoring. However, Wolves threatened to equalize, especially after a poor pass from William Saliba nearly gifted Matheus Cunha a chance, only for Raya to save comfortably.
The Gunners sealed their victory when Saka, combining with Havertz, cut inside and fired a precise shot into the near post. Arsenal’s defense, the best in the league last season, ensured a clean sheet, further solidifying their strong start to the season.
Wolves, now winless in 11 league matches, showed moments of promise but couldn’t break down Arsenal’s solid defense. Despite the loss, there were positives for manager Gary O’Neil to build on as they look to improve in the coming fixtures.
