In a bold and fiery address on Friday, Azimio La Umoja sharply criticized the government's proposed 2024/2025 budget, calling it a severe misstep.
Azimio principal Kalonzo Musyoka led the charge, condemning the National Treasury's budget announcement and urgently calling on the international community to intervene. The Wiper party leader also urged Kenyans abroad to join their fellow citizens in condemning the budget allocations, which he claimed neglect the true needs of the nation.
"In light of these grievous transgressions, we as a coalition urge the international community and civil society organizations to stand in solidarity with Kenyans," Musyoka declared passionately. "We also urge concerned citizens both at home and abroad to help in condemning the Kenya Kwanza regime’s blatant disregard for the public good."
Azimio has rallied its Members of Parliament to take a stand against the Finance Bill set to be tabled in Parliament next week. Musyoka highlighted over Ksh1 trillion in what he described as misallocated funds.
"The National Treasury has an extra Ksh26 billion earmarked for development, and the State Department for Devolution sees an increase of Ksh2.6 billion in development expenditure," Musyoka revealed. "Even more startling, the State Department of Housing has been allocated an additional Ksh72 billion, which is more than the combined budgets of ten counties."
Musyoka didn't hold back, accusing the government of consistently ignoring the needs of Kenyans. He warned that the proposed punitive taxes could drive the country into a deep economic crisis.
"What should Kenyans believe? This is a continuation of Kenya Kwanza's culture of lies. The Kenya Kwanza regime fails to address the people's concerns," Musyoka asserted.
Azimio's vehement opposition comes just a day after the National Treasury submitted its contentious 2024/2025 budget proposal to Parliament for approval.
