Activist Boniface Mwangi has gone into hiding following an alleged kidnap attempt by individuals he identifies as police officers. This development comes as Mwangi intensifies his efforts against the Finance Bill, 2024, which proposes new taxes.
Mwangi, a central figure in the ongoing anti-tax protests, recently announced his temporary retreat to ensure his safety. His commitment to the cause remains unwavering, as he urges supporters to continue the fight.
Earlier, Mwangi and four other activists were arrested near Parliament during the initial Occupy Parliament protests, where they chained themselves to a handcart in a dramatic display of dissent. They were released the next day after the Director of Public Prosecutions found insufficient evidence to charge them with unlawful assembly and breaching the peace.
Following their release, the activists remained steadfast, unveiling a series of protest events culminating in a second round of Occupy Parliament demonstrations on June 25 and a planned march to State House on June 27.
Despite significant public opposition, the Finance Bill passed its Second Reading in Parliament, leading Mwangi to criticize the MPs' decision. He also condemned the police's aggressive response to peaceful protests, which allegedly resulted in the death of protester Rex Kanyeki Masai from a police shooting. The Independent Oversight and Policing Authority (Ipoa) has initiated an investigation into the fatal incident.
Despite these challenges, Mwangi remains resolute. He has emphasized that the movement against the Finance Bill will not be silenced and will continue to push forward with their demonstrations.
