João Pedro’s 95th-minute header clinched a 2-1 victory for Brighton & Hove Albion over Manchester United, sealing a fifth win in six meetings between the two sides. The result leaves Brighton with a perfect start to the season under new manager Fabian Hürzeler, while Erik ten Hag’s United are left to rue missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Both teams entered the match on the back of opening-day victories, but it was Brighton’s commanding 3-0 win over Everton that set the tone. The Seagulls started brightly on the South Coast, with João Pedro testing the United defense early on. While United showed resilience, they lacked the cutting edge, with Amad Diallo squandering a golden chance after a pinpoint cross from Diogo Dalot.
Brighton, active in the transfer market with seven new signings, saw one of their seasoned players, Danny Welbeck, open the scoring against his former club in the 31st minute. Kaoru Mitoma’s precise low cross found Welbeck at the back post, who bundled the ball home to give the hosts a deserved lead. United thought they had equalized shortly after, but Marcus Rashford’s goal was disallowed for offside.
The second half saw United struggle to find their rhythm, with Brighton nearly doubling their lead when Welbeck’s header rattled the crossbar. However, the visitors eventually responded with a clever equalizer from Diallo, whose shot deflected off Jan Paul Van Hecke and into the net following a smart pass from Noussair Mazraoui.
As both teams pushed for a winner, United believed they had secured all three points when substitute Joshua Zirkzee appeared to score, only for the goal to be disallowed due to offside. The decision proved costly as Brighton snatched victory in the dying moments. Pedro’s unmarked header from Adingra’s chipped ball sent the home fans into jubilation, capping off a thrilling encounter.
Brighton’s perfect start to the season continues, while Manchester United will need to regroup quickly as they look to avoid further setbacks in their campaign.
