In a significant move to enhance national security, Kenya's security department has been allocated Ksh.377.5 billion for the fiscal year 2024/25. This announcement was made by Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof. Njuguna Ndung'u at the Parliament Grounds on Thursday as he read the budget estimates for the next financial year.
"Mr. Speaker, enhanced national security creates an enabling environment for business to thrive while aiding faster economic recovery. In this regard, I have proposed an allocation of Ksh 377.5 billion to support operations of the National Police Service, Defence, the National Intelligence Service and Prison Services," said Njuguna.

Breaking down the budget, the Defence sector is set to receive the largest portion, with an allocation of Ksh.173.1 billion. The National Police Service (NPS) will benefit from Ksh.110.6 billion, ensuring the continued support and operational efficiency of the police force.
"Mr. Speaker, the proposed allocations include Ksh 46.3 billion for the National Intelligence Service; and Ksh 32.7 billion for Prisons Services," the Treasury CS added, emphasizing the comprehensive approach to national security.
A significant investment of Ksh.13.9 billion has been earmarked for the leasing of police motor vehicles and the continuation of the Modernization Programme. This initiative aims to upgrade the equipment and infrastructure of the police force, enhancing their operational capacity and effectiveness.
Furthermore, in a bid to bolster forensic capabilities, over Ksh.900 million has been allocated to equip the National Forensic Laboratory. This funding is intended to enhance critical forensic capabilities, including DNA analysis, ballistics testing, and other scientific methods crucial for criminal investigations.
"Mr. Speaker, to step up the war on crime and enhance support to the administration of justice, I have proposed Ksh 918.4 million to equip the National Forensic Laboratory," noted Njuguna. This allocation is expected to significantly improve the NPS's ability to solve crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
The substantial budgetary allocation reflects the Kenyan government's commitment to national security and the creation of a safe and stable environment conducive to economic growth and development. As the country continues to face various security challenges, these investments are poised to strengthen the nation's defense and law enforcement capabilities, ensuring a safer Kenya for all its citizens.
