Panic ensued at the Likoni Ferry Channel early Sunday morning after a passenger bus plunged into the Indian Ocean, leaving nine passengers injured. The bus, traveling from Nairobi to Ukunda, veered into the ocean while attempting to board the ferry. Swift action by Kenya Red Cross rescuers on site helped retrieve the bus and rescue the passengers, averting potential fatalities.
According to a Kenya Red Cross officer, nine individuals were inside the bus and sustained injuries. "We have people on-site, and the bus has been retrieved from the water. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported, but we are monitoring the situation for further developments," the officer stated.
The dramatic incident, which occurred at one of Kenya's busiest and most critical transport crossings, echoes a similar event three years ago when a tourist bus slipped into the ocean. Passengers in that instance had disembarked, avoiding injuries. Today’s accident is the latest in a series of safety concerns surrounding the Likoni Channel, including an August 2024 stampede that left four people injured after ferry delays.
Photos and videos circulating online show the orange bus overturned and partially submerged, as divers and good Samaritans rushed to assist in the rescue efforts. The incident has renewed calls for improved safety measures at the Likoni crossing, which serves as a lifeline for thousands of commuters daily.
Despite the significant role the Likoni Ferry plays in coastal transport, recurring mechanical issues, overcrowding, and accidents continue to put commuters at risk. Safety experts and local leaders are urging immediate action to address the ongoing vulnerabilities at the crossing and ensure a safer commute for all passengers.
