Darwin Nunez's Spectacular Goal and Luis Diaz Double Propel Liverpool to Dominant 3-0 Victory Over Bournemouth

Liverpool returned to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield, thanks to a stunning individual effort from Darwin Nunez and a clinical brace from Luis Diaz. The win not only helped erase memories of last weekend’s shock defeat to Nottingham Forest but also showcased the raw talent of Nunez, who is still fighting for a regular starting spot under new head coach Arne Slot.

Nunez, making his first start since April, delivered a moment of magic to cap off the victory. Flicking on a kick from backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, Nunez latched onto Mohamed Salah’s return pass, ignored the support from both Salah and Diaz, and curled a sublime shot into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area. It was a reminder of the Uruguayan’s spectacular potential, although his erratic performances have thus far prevented him from securing a regular starting role.

Nunez’s goal came in the second half, after Diaz had already paved the way for the win with two goals in quick succession. The Colombian winger, thriving under Slot’s guidance, opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a deft finish after a long diagonal ball from Ibrahima Konate. Diaz struck again just minutes later, converting a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold after a smooth build-up play that caught Bournemouth’s defense flat-footed.

While Diaz’s form has been a revelation, Nunez’s spectacular strike marked his first club goal in 15 appearances and drew emotional scenes as the forward appeared to wipe away tears. It was a crucial moment for the £85 million signing, who is still working to convince Slot that he can be the club’s long-term striker after struggling to live up to expectations last season.

Despite Liverpool's dominance, Salah had an off day in front of goal. The Egyptian was unable to find the back of the net, with two weak efforts saved by Bournemouth goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, and even after intercepting a pass in the second half, his finish was cleared off the line by Milos Kerkez.

Bournemouth, who had a goal ruled out for offside in the opening minutes, struggled to make an impact. Antoine Semenyo, who scored at Anfield last season, had Bournemouth’s best chance of the game, but Kelleher redeemed himself with a good save after a misjudged clearance. Late substitute Luis Sinisterra also hit the crossbar, but by that point, Liverpool were in full control.

The result lifts Liverpool’s spirits as they manage squad rotation ahead of a midweek Carabao Cup clash with West Ham. Nunez’s performance may have given Slot something to think about, but with summer signing Federico Chiesa making his debut and Diogo Jota still the preferred choice up front, competition for the starting striker role remains fierce.

The win keeps Liverpool in contention near the top of the Premier League, while Bournemouth will be left reflecting on a frustrating afternoon against one of the league's most potent attacks.
