An intense heatwave has claimed the lives of more than 20 people in the central city of Beni Mellal over the past 24 hours, according to a statement from Morocco’s health ministry. The extreme temperatures have soared as high as 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of the country, creating a public health emergency.
The heatwave, which began on Monday and continued through Wednesday, has primarily affected the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, exacerbating their health conditions and leading to fatalities, officials reported. Beni Mellal, located over 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of Casablanca, still recorded temperatures of 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit) on Thursday.
In response to the crisis, health officials have urged residents to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Relief is anticipated as meteorologists predict a significant drop in temperatures across Morocco in the coming days. In Marrakesh, a popular tourist destination, temperatures are expected to decrease by 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit) by Sunday.
Morocco is grappling with its sixth consecutive year of drought and has recently experienced record high temperatures during winter, with January being the hottest since 1940. These conditions have severely impacted water reservoirs, posing a significant threat to the country's vital farming sector.
The heatwave in Morocco is part of a larger global trend of rising temperatures. The European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation programme reported that this past Monday was the hottest day on record since measurements began. The programme has forecasted that this summer will see more record-breaking temperatures in the northern hemisphere, driven by climate change.
The deadly heatwave in Morocco highlights the urgent need for comprehensive measures to protect vulnerable populations and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Immediate steps should include public health advisories, infrastructure improvements, and sustainable water management practices to prevent further loss of life and environmental damage.
As the world continues to confront the realities of climate change, this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for global cooperation and action to address the escalating climate crisis.
