Dominic Solanke Opens Tottenham Account in 3-1 Victory Over Brentford

Tottenham Hotspur secured a crucial 3-1 win at home against Brentford, with Dominic Solanke netting his first goal for the club to help overturn an early setback. The win, Tottenham’s first in three Premier League matches, offered some much-needed momentum after a shaky start to the season under new boss Ange Postecoglou.

Brentford wasted no time making their mark, as Bryan Mbeumo volleyed the visitors into the lead after just 22 seconds, capitalizing on poor defending from Micky van de Ven. The goal was reminiscent of Brentford’s lightning-fast opener against Manchester City last week and immediately put Spurs under pressure.

However, Solanke’s impact was immediate, leveling the match just eight minutes later. A misplaced pass from Brentford’s Ethan Pinnock allowed James Maddison to pounce, and while Mark Flekken saved his initial effort, Solanke was perfectly positioned to tap in the rebound. It was a significant moment for Solanke, scoring his first goal since his £65 million move from Bournemouth, and continuing his fine form against Brentford with his third goal in as many games against the Bees.

Spurs, who had struggled to find attacking rhythm in the early weeks of the season, suddenly looked fluid. Captain Son Heung-min came close with a curling shot, and Brennan Johnson—who had been subject to social-media abuse in recent weeks—took his opportunity to silence critics with a brilliant solo goal in the 28th minute. After receiving the ball from Son, Johnson dribbled past Nathan Collins and fired into the bottom corner, sending the home crowd into raptures.

Despite their strong start, Brentford failed to capitalize on key moments. Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was called into action on several occasions, making crucial saves to deny Mbeumo and substitute Kevin Schade as the Bees pressed for an equalizer. A controversial moment came when Brentford’s players and manager Thomas Frank were left furious after Vicario appeared to handle the ball outside his area, only for the referee to wave play on.

As Brentford pushed forward in search of a goal, Spurs remained dangerous on the counter. The win was sealed five minutes from time when Cristian Romero's clever pass found Son, who unselfishly laid the ball off for Maddison to chip home a delightful finish and secure all three points.

Tottenham's newfound attacking fluidity will be encouraging for Postecoglou, whose team had narrowly avoided an early Carabao Cup exit to Coventry just days earlier. With Solanke opening his account and Johnson building confidence, Spurs look to be finding their stride as they aim to climb the Premier League table.

For Brentford, the defeat will sting after another early goal was undone by defensive errors and missed chances. However, with the international break looming, Frank will have time to regroup and refocus his side as they look to bounce back from a disappointing result.
