The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has summoned Bomet Governor Hillary Kipng’eno Barchok and former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati. The two leaders face serious corruption allegations involving millions of shillings.
What’s Happening to Governors Barchok and Wangamati
The EACC announced that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has approved charges against the two governors and several of their associates. All suspects have been directed to appear at the EACC Headquarters at the Integrity Centre in Nairobi on Monday, September 1, 2025, at 8:00 am for processing and arraignment in court.

Charges Against Governor Barchok
Governor Barchok faces charges of conflict of interest and unlawful acquisition of public property. He is accused of working with Evans Kipkoech Korir, a director of Chemasus Construction Ltd, to influence procurement deals within Bomet County . Investigators allege that he received Ksh 2.75 million from companies linked to county contracts. If found guilty, Barchok will also face charges related to proceeds of crime and abuse of office.
Charges Against Former Governor Wangamati
Former Governor Wycliffe Wangamati is accused of embezzling over Ksh 70 million during his tenure in Bungoma County. More than ten of his associates, including company directors and relatives, are also facing charges. The alleged scheme involved fraudulent tenders, illegal procurement practices, and benefiting from county contracts through companies linked to family members and close allies. Charges include conflict of interest, acquisition of proceeds of crime, and violation of procurement laws.
Wider Investigations
The ODPP has also ordered further investigations into corruption cases in Kiambu and Marsabit counties. Preliminary findings suggest that hundreds of millions of shillings may have been lost through illegal tenders and companies tied to senior county officials.
