Faith Kipyegon Reinstated as Silver Medalist in Olympic 5000m After Controversial Disqualification****Paris, August 6, 2024** –

Faith Kipyegon, the world 1500m record holder, has been reinstated as the silver medalist in the Olympic 5000m following a successful appeal against her disqualification. The decision, announced late Monday night, ensures a 1-2 finish for Kenya in the event, with Beatrice Chebet taking gold.

Kipyegon's initial disqualification for obstruction against Ethiopian world record holder Gudaf Tsegay had caused an uproar. The Kenyan delegation quickly filed an appeal, leading to the reversal of the decision. Chebet's victory came with a time of 14:28.56, while Kipyegon finished in 14:29.60.

"I was in front, and she tried to come ahead of me. I told her, 'Please, you'll push me inside, come slowly, and I'll let you pass,' but she kept pushing, putting me in an awkward position. I did not push anyone," Kipyegon explained after the decision was overturned.

Sifan Hassan, who had initially been awarded the silver medal due to Kipyegon's disqualification, was downgraded to bronze. Italian Nadia Battocletti returned to her initial fourth place.

Kipyegon is set to defend her 1500m title on Tuesday, aiming for a historic third consecutive win in the event. “I’m disappointed, but I will now focus on my race tomorrow,” she said, looking ahead to the next challenge.

Beatrice Chebet, fresh from her 5000m triumph, will face off against Hassan once more in the 10,000m on Friday, promising another exciting showdown at the Paris Games.
