Kenya’s star athlete, Faith Kipyegon, continues to etch her name in the annals of sports history after an outstanding performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics. On Saturday, Kipyegon shattered the Olympic record in the 1500m race, clocking an impressive 3:51.29, securing her third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the event.
This remarkable achievement not only reinforces her status as the most decorated athlete over the distance but also brings significant financial rewards. Kipyegon is set to receive a total of over Ksh9 million (USD 65,000) for her feat. The International Olympic Committee will award her Ksh6.5 million (USD 50,000) for winning gold, while she will also receive at least Ksh3 million from Kenyan sources.
While her performance was just shy of breaking her own world record, Kipyegon’s Olympic record is a testament to her enduring dominance in the sport. Earlier in the Paris Games, she also claimed a silver medal in the 5000m, finishing behind compatriot Beatrice Chebet.
Kipyegon’s accomplishments have drawn widespread acclaim, with congratulatory messages pouring in from across Kenya, including from President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Her success, which includes previous endorsement deals with global brands like Nike, continues to inspire a nation and solidify her legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
