The U.S.-based Ford Foundation has categorically denied allegations of financing the ongoing anti-government demonstrations in Kenya. This comes after the Kenyan government, through a letter from Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'Oei, expressed serious concerns about the Foundation's funding activities in the country.

In a letter addressed to Ford Foundation President Darren Walker, PS Sing'Oei highlighted that between April 2023 and May 2024, several non-state recipients, including Africa Uncensored Limited, the Kenya Human Rights Commission, and Transparency International, received a total of USD 5.78 million (approximately Ksh.752 million) from the Foundation. The Kenyan government's communication suggested a link between this funding and the intensification of local anti-government protests, prompting a call for clarity and accountability.
In a swift rejoinder, the Ford Foundation reiterated its commitment to transparency and the support of civil society causes globally. "As a charitable foundation with a global presence, our grantmaking is transparent and readily available on our website, www.fordfoundation.org. This includes a database showing where our funds go, as well as highlights from our rich history in East Africa and around the world," the Foundation stated on its website.
The Foundation acknowledged receipt of the letter from the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and reaffirmed its adherence to stringent grant-making protocols. "While we continue to acknowledge the right of Kenyans to peacefully advocate for a just and equitable country, we repudiate any actions or speech that are hateful or advocate violence against any institution, individual, or community," the statement read.
The Ford Foundation emphasized its ongoing commitment to fostering social justice and equitable development. "We remain committed to building our legacy in the region so that Kenyans can unlock and tap into new opportunities," the Foundation added.
The unfolding saga places the spotlight on the delicate balance between foreign aid and local political dynamics, raising critical questions about the role of international organizations in domestic affairs. As the dialogue continues, the Ford Foundation's stance on transparency and accountability will likely remain under close scrutiny.
