In a pivotal effort to uphold electoral integrity, former Chief Justice David Maraga is leading a 14-member Election Observation Team from the East African Community (EAC) to oversee Rwanda's upcoming General Election on Monday, July 15, 2024. The mission, officially flagged off by EAC Secretary General Veronica Nduva on Friday, July 12, underscores the EAC's commitment to democratic governance in the region.
The observation teams, strategically deployed across all 30 districts in Rwanda’s four provinces and the City of Kigali, arrived in Kigali on July 8, 2024. Since then, they have been engaging with a broad spectrum of electoral stakeholders to deepen their understanding of the election preparations. This engagement included intensive training on regional and international election observation principles, practices, and ethics.
Maraga highlighted the mission's comprehensive approach, informed by a detailed analysis conducted by an advance team from the EAC. "Our advance team’s findings on Rwanda's electoral readiness have been instrumental in shaping our strategies. We are committed to ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process," Maraga stated.
The EAC’s involvement in observing Rwanda’s election is a testament to the regional body's dedication to fostering democratic values and stability. As the country prepares to head to the polls, the EAC observers' presence aims to reinforce confidence in the electoral process among the Rwandan populace and the international community.
