Four Dead as Devastating Fire Ravages Toi Market.

A devastating fire broke out at Toi Market in Kibra, Nairobi, on the morning of Saturday, August 3, 2024, claiming the lives of four people, including a child. The victims were reportedly trying to salvage their belongings when they were tragically overwhelmed by the relentless flames.

The blaze has once again plunged the market into chaos, leaving around 2,000 traders grappling with the loss of their livelihoods. For many, this disaster is all too familiar. Toi Market has a long and troubling history of fires, each one leaving behind a trail of destruction and unanswered questions.

Kenneth Jumba, the chair of Toi Market, has raised suspicions that the fire may have been deliberately set. “This isn’t the first time we’ve faced such a catastrophe, and it’s hard to believe it’s just a coincidence,” Jumba remarked, echoing the growing frustration among traders. “We’ve seen this happen too many times, and yet, there’s never any accountability.”

Jumba’s concerns are well-founded. The market has been plagued by fires for years, with a similar incident in June 2023 destroying property worth millions of shillings. These recurring disasters date back to at least 2014, prompting serious questions about the market’s safety protocols and management.

One of the key issues exacerbating these fires is the lack of adequate access roads, which severely hampers the response time of fire services. As the market’s traders begin the painful process of assessing their losses, there is a growing demand for improved safety measures and infrastructure to prevent such tragedies from happening again.

The heartbreaking loss of life and the destruction of livelihoods at Toi Market serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for change. The repeated devastation cannot continue to be ignored, and the calls for action are louder than ever.
