IG Douglas Kanja Assures Calm Ahead of Rigathi Gachagua’s Return from the US

Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja has moved to calm fears of possible unrest ahead of the return of former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua from the United States.

Speaking on Wednesday after a joint dialogue with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on training and capacity building, IG Kanja described Gachagua’s much-publicized arrival as an “ordinary event.”

Security Measures in Place

IG Kanja assured the public that the National Police Service is fully in control of security arrangements. He emphasized that officers expect normalcy when Gachagua lands at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday.

“No one is above the law when it comes to offences. If there are issues to address, they will be handled according to the law,” Kanja said.

He was responding to questions on whether Gachagua would be summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over remarks he made abroad criticizing the government.

Government’s Warning to Rigathi Gachagua Supporters

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has cautioned Gachagua and his supporters against any attempts to disrupt public order. According to Murkomen, intelligence reports suggest there could be planned chaos during Gachagua’s arrival.

The CS further warned that the government is ready to take legal action if DCP’s call for over one million supporters at JKIA leads to unrest.

“The last time he was around, there were disruptions in the name of protests. We are prepared, and the National Police Service will protect citizens and their property,” Murkomen said during the 30th Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Murang’a County on Tuesday.

Bottom Line

The police have assured Kenyans that all necessary security measures are in place. While Gachagua’s return has stirred political debate, authorities insist that law and order will be maintained.
