Junet Mohamed Declares Himself the True Opposition Leader, Challenges Kalonzo’s Claim

Junet Mohamed, the Minority Leader in the National Assembly, asserted his position as the legitimate leader of the opposition. His statement came in response to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka's recent claim to the title of official opposition leader, a role that Junet argues does not exist under the current legal framework.

Junet emphasized that the Constitution does not provide for an official opposition leader, making it clear that his role as Minority Leader inherently positions him as the head of the opposition. “As it stands now, I am the official opposition leader because I am the minority leader, and you cannot take away the job God has given me. Those in the opposition should know I am their leader,” he declared.

The outspoken ODM MP took a firm stance against Kalonzo's self-proclamation, pointing out that such a title has no constitutional backing. “I have seen our colleagues saying we in ODM are in government and such stuff, and they are now opposition leaders. There is no part in the Constitution that talks about an opposition leader. Let no one allocate themselves a job that is non-existent. Let us first create an office, and then someone can occupy it,” Junet remarked, underscoring the need for legal clarity before any such position can be claimed.

Adding weight to Junet’s argument, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale also weighed in, noting that Kalonzo lacks the necessary parliamentary support to justify his claim. Duale's comments further highlighted the ongoing power struggle within the opposition, as leaders jostle for influence in the absence of a formally recognized role.

The remarks have ignited a fresh debate within political circles, as the opposition's leadership continues to be a contentious issue in the evolving political landscape.
