Justice for Rex: IPOA Calls for Witnesses in Fatal Police Shooting

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is urging the public to come forward with any information regarding the tragic death of Rex Kanyike Masai, who was fatally shot by police officers during the anti-Finance bill demonstrations on June 20. Masai, 29, was laid to rest on July 5 amidst widespread public outcry.

IPOA, which has already initiated an investigation into Masai's death, emphasizes that eyewitness accounts are crucial for ensuring accountability and providing closure to Masai's grieving family. “We need the public's help to hold the involved police accountable,” IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori stated. She further added, "Both protestors and police largely showed restraint, but specific incidents like the case of Masai need thorough investigation."

Witnesses are encouraged to share their information by calling 1559 or 0204906000.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) directed IPOA on June 21 to investigate the incident and submit a report within 21 days. Makori mentioned that IPOA has been closely monitoring police conduct since the protests began on Tuesday, June 18, noting several injuries among protesters, including Masai's fatal shooting.

The call for justice for Masai comes amid a broader demand for comprehensive investigations into the deaths of protestors across the country. While the government reports that 25 people have been killed and 400 injured, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) asserts that at least 43 people lost their lives and over 600 were injured during the anti-government demonstrations.

As the nation mourns and seeks answers, IPOA's appeal underscores the critical need for transparency and justice in addressing police conduct during protests.
