In a striking rebuke to President William Ruto's recent call for national dialogue, NARC Kenya Party leader Martha Karua has dismissed the initiative as a ploy to stifle the growing demand for change among Kenya's Gen Z population.
Speaking on Tuesday, Karua asserted that meaningful dialogue requires genuine intentions and must prioritize the interests of the Kenyan people. "Dialogue can only be meaningful if the players are in good faith and guided by the best interests of the people,This is a trap period" she stated.
Karua cautioned the political elite against co-opting the legitimate push for accountability and reforms championed by the youth. "Let’s be careful as the political class lest we hijack the genuine clamor for accountability and reforms by Gen Z. I agree with those who say action is needed now on the clear and attainable demands of Gen Z to enhance accountability and make the state work for the masses rather than for a handful of elites," Karua added.
Echoing Karua’s sentiments, Eugene Wamalwa, her Azimio la Umoja counterpart, firmly rejected the dialogue proposal, declaring he is "not boarding" the initiative.
Their sharp criticism follows President Ruto's announcement of a six-day multi-sectoral dialogue forum set to commence on Monday, July 15. The forum, backed by opposition leader Raila Odinga, aims to address pressing national issues and will include representatives from political parties, religious groups, civil society, employers, and youth.
As the debate intensifies, the question remains whether the dialogue will proceed as planned or if the voices of dissent will reshape the approach to Kenya's pressing challenges.
