In a bid to boost managed migration and skilled labor exchange, Kenya and Austria are on the verge of finalising a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Mobility and Migration.
During a sideline meeting at an international summit, Kenya's Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Austria's Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Alexander Schallenberg, agreed to fast-track the deal. The proposed MoU aims to facilitate legal migration while fostering mutually beneficial labor exchanges between the two countries.
Formalizing Diplomatic Ties
The high-level talks also focused on deepening political consultations between the two nations, reflecting their aligned foreign policy goals. Both parties agreed to establish a formal mechanism for regular, structured discussions to further strengthen diplomatic relations.
“We pledge to reinforce high-level bilateral engagements, including more frequent and substantive exchanges at the highest levels of government,” said Mudavadi.
The meeting was attended by key diplomatic figures, including Kenya's Ambassador to Austria, Maurice Makoloo, and Austria's Director for Sub-Saharan Africa Affairs, Ambassador Robert Zischg.
Boosting Economic Ties
Beyond migration, the discussions centered on amplifying economic cooperation, building on the momentum from the Austrian trade mission to Kenya in October 2023. This marks a renewed effort by both nations to expand bilateral economic activities, particularly in trade and investment.
Kenya’s Broader Strategy
Kenya's push to finalize the MoU with Austria comes on the heels of a similar agreement with Germany, highlighting the country's strategic focus on managed legal migration as a means of addressing its skilled labor needs. These agreements are expected to provide Kenyan workers with more opportunities abroad while ensuring that migration processes are streamlined and mutually beneficial.
