Kenya Power Initiates Free Prepaid Meter Update for 7.4 Million Customers

In a sweeping move to enhance service and security, Kenya Power has launched a nationwide initiative targeting 7.4 million prepaid meter users. The update exercise, known as "Token Meter Yako," aims to ensure all customers using prepaid meters receive essential updates free of charge.

Key Details of the Initiative

- Focus: Customers with prepaid meters (token meters).

- Cost:The update is free for all customers.

- Process:Customers will receive two SMS codes from Kenya Power — a Reset Code and an Update Code.

- Requirement:Ensure all previously purchased tokens are loaded into meters before applying the new codes.

Kenya Power has set a deadline of the end of August 2024 for the updates. Post-deadline, meters that have not been updated will cease to accept new tokens, making timely updates crucial for uninterrupted service.

Official Statement:

Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, Kenya Power’s Managing Director & CEO, explained the importance of the update, stating, "A total of 7.4 million prepaid meters are targeted for this exercise. All prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline date will stop accepting tokens after the deadline date. Because of this, we have put in place elaborate measures to ensure that all our customers are fully empowered and assisted in updating their meters to continue to enjoy our services."

Steps for Customers:

1. Receiving Codes:customers will receive two codes via SMS when they purchase new tokens. These codes must be keyed into the meter as per instructions.

2. Automatic Alerts: For those who do not purchase tokens regularly, Kenya Power will send the necessary codes to ensure their meters are updated promptly.

Additional Information:

- Impact on Existing Tokens:Existing tokens already loaded into meters will remain unaffected. However, customers must load any previously purchased tokens before updating to avoid invalidation.

- Customer Support:Kenya Power will run a comprehensive media campaign to inform customers about the update process. The company will also engage with stakeholders and consumer organizations to facilitate widespread compliance.

This proactive update initiative reflects Kenya Power’s dedication to leveraging technology to provide secure and reliable electricity services. By ensuring all prepaid meters are updated, the company aims to enhance service efficiency and customer satisfaction.
