Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wa has sounded the alarm over what he describes as a strategic move by Mt. Kenya MPs to oust Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from the region's political scene. Speaking at Our Lady of Sorrows Baricho Catholic Parish in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, Thang'wa accused a faction of MPs of plotting an impeachment motion against Gachagua to sideline him and reallocate political power among themselves.
The senator's remarks come in response to a recent wave of endorsements for Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, which saw 69 MPs declare their allegiance to him as the preferred link to the Executive. Thang'wa warned that this shift in loyalty could lead to political instability, urging Kindiki to be cautious, citing the fate of Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who was previously elevated by the same MPs before being abandoned.
“This is their plan—to unite, bring an impeachment motion, remove him from office, jail him, and divide the positions among themselves,” Thang'wa said, defending Gachagua as the region’s chosen leader. He called on Mt. Kenya voters to stand firm in their support for the DP.
The political shake-up comes as MPs from the region, frustrated by stalled development projects, seek a centralised leader to push their agenda. The latest move, dubbed the 'Nyandarua Declaration,' highlights a growing divide in Mt. Kenya's political landscape, raising questions about Gachagua's grip on the region's leadership.
