Kithure Kindiki Sworn in as New Deputy President

In a landmark ceremony on Friday morning, Kithure Kindiki officially assumed office as Kenya’s Deputy President, replacing Rigathi Gachagua, who was impeached by the Senate last month. The oath-taking, conducted by Judiciary Registrar Winfred Mokaya and overseen by Chief Justice Martha Koome, is seen as a pivotal moment for the country, signaling a renewed commitment to constitutional integrity and governmental accountability.

Kindiki, a respected legal scholar and former Cabinet Secretary, took two oaths — the oath of allegiance and the oath of office — vowing to uphold Kenya’s constitution, protect its sovereignty, and serve with integrity. In his solemn pledge, he affirmed, “I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Republic of Kenya… and uphold the sovereignty, integrity, and dignity of the people of Kenya.” This formal commitment underscores the weight of his role as he steps into one of Kenya’s highest offices amidst heightened public scrutiny.

Attorney General Dorcas Oduor supervised the signing of the oaths, which were prepared in three sets: one to be kept by Kindiki, another by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, and a third by the Judiciary. This structured process, including the ceremonial handover of Kenya's Constitution by President William Ruto, reflects a strong adherence to protocol and a symbolic passing of authority.

In his first speech as Deputy President, Kindiki expressed gratitude to President Ruto for entrusting him with the office, signaling his readiness to bring a fresh vision and commitment to Kenya’s leadership. This transition, coming in the wake of Gachagua’s impeachment, highlights the evolving political landscape in Kenya, underscoring a commitment to constitutional principles and responsive governance.
