Leaders Oppose Term Limit Extension: Cherargei's Bill Faces Backlash from ODM, Western Kenya Leaders.

The Senate Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) is set to table a report on public feedback regarding a proposed bill that has ignited a nationwide debate: extending term limits for the president and other elected leaders. Spearheaded by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, the bill has drawn significant opposition, with Western Kenya leaders and the ODM party leading the charge.

The proposal, which was tabled by Cherargei, has triggered public outcry, particularly in Western Kenya. "Now what will that change? It will still be the same trouble," remarked Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya. Reflecting this sentiment, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa added, "We know Cherargei was testing waters, but that matter is absolutely impossible."

Ayub Savula, Deputy Governor of Kakamega, was equally vocal. "We don’t want leaders staying in office like Museveni," he commented, referencing the long-standing Ugandan president.

Public participation exercises led by the Senate at Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Convention Centre saw a flood of concerns from Kenyans. Thousands submitted their memoranda, reflecting a robust public response to the bill, resulting in a reported overload on the Senate's submission channels.

The JLAC, chaired by Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei, will table the findings of this public engagement before the bill moves to its second reading. The ODM party has firmly voiced its opposition to the bill. ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna stated, "As ODM, we will not accept such matters. Leaders will go back to the people, and they will decide." Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi echoed this stance: "We are waiting for that report, but we will not support it."

The bill has also met resistance from within the ruling UDA party, indicating bipartisan concerns over the proposed extension. The discussion surrounding term limits underscores a recurring theme in Kenyan political leaders' accountability and the preservation of democratic principles. As the Senate prepares to review the JLAC’s report, the future of the bill remains uncertain, though it is clear that extending term limits will face an uphill battle from both public and political opposition.
