A police officer stationed at Makongeni Police Station narrowly escaped the wrath of an enraged mob after a fatal accident on Lusaka Road in Nairobi on Friday evening. The officer, who was driving an Isuzu NQR Canter, reportedly knocked down a male pedestrian, who died instantly at the scene.
The incident, which occurred around 6:45 pm, quickly escalated as boda boda riders and members of the public descended on the officer. Angered by the pedestrian's death, the mob stoned the officer’s vehicle and set it on fire, severely damaging the front cabin seat and the left passenger door.
According to a police report obtained by Citizen Digital, the situation grew increasingly volatile until a nearby police patrol team arrived on the scene and managed to rescue the officer. Despite the rescue, the officer sustained injuries to his right elbow and multiple injuries on his back. He was promptly taken to Huruma Nursing Home for medical treatment.
The police patrol team, along with traffic personnel, successfully restored order in the area and documented the scene. The incident has sparked renewed concerns about road safety and the potential dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the accident and the subsequent actions taken by the mob.
