Manchester City Begins Title Defense with Commanding Win Over Chelsea

Manchester City kicked off their Premier League title defense with a statement 2-0 victory over Chelsea, underscoring their dominance and intent to secure a fifth consecutive crown. Erling Haaland once again delivered on opening day, scoring in the first half to set City on their way to a comfortable win at the Etihad.

City, who have now won 13 of their last 14 Premier League openers, looked every bit the reigning champions, dictating play from the start. Haaland's goal came after he outmuscled Marc Cucurella and coolly chipped the ball over Chelsea's goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, marking his third consecutive season scoring on matchday one.

Chelsea, under new boss Enzo Maresca, struggled to find their rhythm but were kept in the game by the heroics of Sánchez, who produced a stunning save to deny Jérémy Doku and thwarted several other City efforts. The Blues briefly thought they had equalized just before halftime when Nicolas Jackson fired home, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Pep Guardiola's men continued to press after the break, with Phil Foden coming close to extending the lead. A goal from Rico Lewis was disallowed due to a foul by Haaland in the buildup, but City’s persistence paid off late in the game when former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovačić struck from the edge of the box, with Sánchez unable to keep out the powerful effort.

City's convincing win sends a clear message to their Premier League rivals, while Chelsea faces early doubts as they prepare for a crucial UEFA Europa Conference League qualifier against Servette. The victory marks a perfect start for Guardiola’s side, setting the tone for what could be another triumphant season.
