Manchester Rivals Clash Again as City Seek Community Shield Revenge Against United

The new English domestic season kicks off with a thrilling Manchester derby, echoing the dramatic end of the previous season just over two months ago. Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City face their arch-rivals Manchester United at Wembley, seeking redemption after a shocking 2-1 defeat in the FA Cup final last May.

This time, the coveted Community Shield is on the line. Despite their recent dominance in English football, City have struggled in this competition, winning just six out of their 15 appearances. Pep Guardiola's side has also lost the season's curtain-raiser in three consecutive years. No team has lost four in a row since Manchester United between 1998 and 2001, a statistic City will be desperate to avoid.

United, on the other hand, boast an impressive record in the Community Shield, with 21 wins and just nine losses. This will be their first appearance since 2016 when they secured victory in José Mourinho's first competitive match as manager. The Red Devils have won their last four appearances in this competition, including a memorable 3-2 victory over City in 2011, their only previous clash in this event.

Manager Erik ten Hag, who has already won silverware in both of his seasons in charge, hopes that victory in the FA Cup final has erased the memories of a disappointing 2023/24 campaign. However, United's rocky pre-season, marked by two wins and three losses, along with injuries to new signing Leny Yoro and striker Rasmus Højlund, suggest that ten Hag still has work to do to reignite optimism at Old Trafford.

Players to Watch:

City's star striker Erling Haaland, fresh off a hat-trick against Chelsea in their final pre-season match, will be keen to continue his scoring spree against one of his favorite opponents. Haaland has scored six goals in four league encounters against United. For the Red Devils, Marcus Rashford, who missed out on Euro 2024 selection, will look to make an impact against City, a team he's faced 21 times in his career, scoring in six of those matches.

Hot Stat:

Four of the last seven Community Shields have been decided by penalties, adding an extra layer of suspense to what promises to be a high-stakes encounter.
