Medics for Kenya Withdraws Services Amid Escalating Violence in Protests, cites infiltration by goons

Medics for Kenya, a volunteer group of health practitioners providing emergency medical services during the anti-tax protests, has announced the withdrawal of their services due to escalating violence. The group, which includes members of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU), had been attending to medical emergencies at various protest sites.

The organization, composed of doctors, nurses, clinical officers, psychologists, nutritionists, paramedics, interns, and students, had established medical camps in Nairobi and other towns to treat injured protesters. Ambulances were also on standby to transport patients requiring further medical care.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Medics for Kenya cited concerns for the safety of their volunteers as the primary reason for their withdrawal. "With the change in maandamano atmosphere and the deployment of goons, we as Medics for Kenya, highly value the lives of our volunteers. As we say in the corridors of hospitals, 'Your Safety Comes First'. Therefore, it is with much regret and pain that we announce Medics for Kenya will withdraw their medical camp services all across the country," the statement read.

Dr. Austin Omondi, co-founder of Medics for Kenya, assured the public that their hotlines would remain open to coordinate between emergency response providers and hospitals. "We will continue to provide support remotely and ensure that those in need can still access emergency care," he added.

In Nairobi, the medical camps had been set up at key locations including Jamia Mosque, All Saints Cathedral, and Holy Family Basilica. These camps had been crucial in providing immediate medical attention to injured protesters.

The withdrawal of Medics for Kenya is a significant development amid the ongoing protests, which have been marked by increasing violence and clashes with law enforcement. The presence of medical volunteers had been a critical lifeline for many protesters, highlighting the essential role of healthcare providers in times of civil unrest.

As the protests continue, the need for a peaceful resolution becomes ever more urgent to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved.
