Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has firmly denied the swirling rumors that the Kenyan government is planning to sell Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to foreign investors. This denial comes in the wake of intense speculation across Kenya’s media platforms, culminating in a major public protest dubbed ‘#OccupyJKIA’ on Tuesday.
In a high stakes session with the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee on Monday, Mudavadi set the record straight, stating unequivocally that any sale of such a critical national asset would necessitate thorough public consultations and the explicit approval of Parliament. “The sale of JKIA or any other high-value national asset is a matter of public interest and would be subject to transparent processes,” Mudavadi asserted.
The rumors have sparked significant public concern, leading to the unprecedented protest aimed at safeguarding Kenya’s largest and busiest airport. Mudavadi's reassurances are expected to calm the growing unease among citizens and stakeholders who have been vocal in their opposition to the purported sale.
