Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been sacked by Besiktas after the Turkish club crashed out of the UEFA Conference League. The decision came on Thursday following a shock defeat against Swiss side Lausanne.

Besiktas lost 1-0 in the second leg played in Istanbul, resulting in a 2-1 aggregate defeat. This early exit from European competition triggered an emergency board meeting, where the club decided to terminate Solskjaer’s contract.
In an official statement, the club said:
“Our contract with head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated following a board decision. Our president, Serdal Adali, expressed his gratitude to Solskjaer for his service.”
Short Tenure Comes to an End
Solskjaer, 52, was appointed in January after taking a three-year break from coaching. Expectations were high, but results failed to improve.
Besiktas had already been under pressure after finishing fourth in the Turkish Super Lig last season. The tension increased when the club was knocked out by Shakhtar Donetsk during the Europa League qualifiers in July.
From Manchester United to Besiktas
Solskjaer started his coaching journey with Manchester United’s reserve team before moving to Molde in Norway. His big break came in December 2018, when he was appointed interim manager at Manchester United.
He impressed early on and secured the job permanently three months later. Under his leadership, United finished second in the 2020/21 Premier League season. However, after a poor run of results, he was sacked in November 2021.
What’s Next for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer?
Solskjaer now faces another uncertain chapter in his managerial career. Despite setbacks, his name still carries weight in European football. Whether he seeks another club role or takes another break remains to be seen.
