Leaders of the Azimio opposition coalition have demanded the immediate resignation of the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome and Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei following the death of Rex Kanyike Masai.
At a press conference, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka condemned the police officials for failing to protect peaceful protestors who were demonstrating against the Finance Bill 2024. Musyoka also called for the Director of Public Prosecutions to bring charges against Koome, Bungei, and the officer responsible for the shooting. He said, "We demand that Inspector General Japheth Koome and Nairobi Regional Commander Mr. Adamson Bungei immediately tender their resignations for failing to protect the peaceful demonstrators." Musyoka also insisted on legal action against the officers involved.
The Azimio leader questioned the rationale behind the police's use of force against unarmed protestors and called for accountability. "This tragic incident has profound implications. Our coalition is deeply disturbed by the fatal shooting of Rex. We have endured too many of these tragedies, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the community," he stated.
Musyoka expressed solidarity with Rex's family, promising support in their quest for justice. "We stand with Rex, his family, and his comrades. We pledge to provide all necessary assistance in seeking answers and justice. We demand that those responsible for this act of police brutality be prosecuted for murder in a court of law."
Echoing these sentiments, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino warned the involved officer to turn himself in or face the consequences. "To the police officer, you must surrender yourself before Kenyans catch up with you because if they get you on the streets, it will be something else," he said.
CCTV footage shared online depicted a police officer shooting at protestors in Nairobi's central business district on Thursday night, fueling public outcry and demands for justice.
