On Saturday, Machakos County Roads Minister Rita Ndunge faced a hostile reception and was forced to flee during a funeral ceremony for Erickson Kyalo Mutisya, who died in anti-government protests.
Mutisya, from Kisekini Village in the Thinu area, tragically lost his life while protesting the now-withdrawn Finance Bill, 2024. Rita Ndunge was the highest-ranking official from Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s administration present at the funeral.
During the service, the Master of Ceremony (MC) invited Ndunge to the stage to address mourners and eulogize Mutisya. Aware of the crowd's hostility, she hesitated and asked the MC to excuse her from speaking. However, after persistent urging, Ndunge took the microphone and called for justice for Mutisya.
Her speech was met with immediate heckling and demands from the crowd for her to leave the stage. The situation escalated when a young mourner, identified as a member of Gen Z, stormed the stage and grabbed the microphone from her. Amidst the growing chaos and fearing for her safety, Ndunge quickly left the stage and vanished into the crowd.
This incident occurred just two days after Governor Wavinya Ndeti claimed there was a political plot against her involving young men being sent to disrupt her office.
The tense atmosphere at the funeral highlights the deep-seated frustrations and anger within the community over the recent protests and the broader political landscape.
