President William Ruto has delivered a strong and unapologetic rebuttal to critics of Team Kenya’s performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics by awarding Ksh19.75 million to the athletes, reinforcing his pride in their achievements. Despite Kenya emerging as the top African nation and 17th globally with 11 medals—four gold, two silver, and five bronze—criticism back home has questioned the team’s global standing.
At a lively breakfast at the Eldoret State Lodge on Thursday, August 15, President Ruto praised the athletes, stating, "You did not disappoint." His words were backed by financial rewards, with Beatrice Chebet receiving Ksh6 million for her dual gold victories in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. Faith Kipyegon, who took gold in the 1,500 meters and silver in the 5,000 meters, was awarded Ksh5 million, while 20-year-old Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the youngest Olympic champion in the 800 meters, received Ksh3 million.

Ronald Kwemoi, who won silver in the men’s 5,000 meters, was awarded Ksh2 million, and other medalists, including Benson Kipruto, Abraham Kibiwot, Mary Moraa, Hellen Obiri, and Faith Cherotich, received Ksh750,000 each.

The President’s gesture not only acknowledges the athletes' success but also serves as a powerful message against the criticism they faced. President Ruto’s commitment to supporting Kenyan athletes remains steadfast, as evidenced by his ongoing rewards and recognition of their efforts on the global stage.
