President William Ruto has announced a significant step towards national reconciliation and progress with the launch of a six-day multi-sectoral dialogue forum, set to commence on July 15. Held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, the forum aims to tackle critical issues facing Kenya, drawing representatives from political parties, religious groups, civil society, employers, and youth.
In a press briefing, President Ruto emphasized the forum's goal of proposing viable solutions for the country, following consultations to ensure financial responsibility. Participants are expected to cover their attendance costs, underscoring a commitment to prudent fiscal management.
The initiative follows the assent to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) (Amendment) Bill, 2024, a measure stemming from recommendations by the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO). This committee was formed in the aftermath of the disputed 2022 presidential election, highlighting the forum's relevance in addressing electoral concerns.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a key opposition figure, has voiced support for Ruto's dialogue efforts, endorsing the initiative as crucial for navigating Kenya's current challenges.
The upcoming forum is poised to be a pivotal moment in Kenya's political landscape, promising a platform for inclusive discussions and collaborative solutions to propel the nation forward.
