In a notable diplomatic turn, Kenyan President William Ruto has publicly commended the Ford Foundation for its support of democracy and international reforms, barely two months after accusing the U.S.-based organization of sponsoring violent protests in Kenya.
During his second visit to the United States this year, Ruto met with Ford Foundation President Darren Walker, striking a markedly different tone from his previous harsh rhetoric. Following their meeting, Ruto emphasized the foundation’s crucial contributions to democracy, climate action, and global economic reforms, signaling a potential shift in Kenya's foreign relations approach.
"Kenya appreciates the Ford Foundation’s commitment to safeguarding our democracy and supporting our calls for reforms in global economic institutions, climate action, and modern technology regulation," Ruto said, highlighting a new chapter in their relationship.
This change comes just weeks after Ruto publicly accused the Ford Foundation of fueling anti-government demonstrations in Nairobi and other major cities—a move that had sparked tensions between the government and civil society. The President’s new stance is seen as an effort to bolster international alliances, particularly as Kenya positions itself at the forefront of global climate and economic discourse.
Political analysts suggest this shift is a strategic recalibration, underscoring the growing importance of global partnerships for Kenya’s long-term stability and development. The meeting between Ruto and Walker also highlights Kenya's increasing focus on international cooperation to address critical challenges such as climate change and economic equity.
This diplomatic U-turn reflects Ruto’s broader aim to secure external support for Kenya's ambitious reform agenda and solidify its role on the global stage, as the country continues to navigate complex domestic and international pressures.
