President William Ruto Reaffirms Muguka's Legal Status in Consultative Meeting with Embu County Leadership

On Monday, President William Ruto convened a critical consultative meeting with the leadership of Embu County to address the ongoing controversy surrounding the ban of muguka, a variety of miraa, by several counties. This meeting comes amidst rising tensions and legal disputes over the cultivation and sale of muguka, which plays a significant role in the local economy.

During the discussions, it was unanimously agreed that muguka is officially recognized as a scheduled crop under the Crops Act of 2013 and the Miraa Regulations of 2023. This recognition provides muguka with the same legal protections and regulatory framework as other crops planned in Kenya.

President Ruto emphasized that any local laws or orders that contradict national legislation regarding muguka are considered null and void. In a firm statement, he reiterated the supremacy of national laws over local regulations, ensuring that the legal status of muguka remains protected under the existing national legislative framework.

"The recognition of muguka under the Crops Act 2013 and the Miraa Regulations 2023 is clear. Any attempts to undermine this through contradictory local laws are illegal and detrimental to the livelihoods of many Kenyans who depend on this crop," President Ruto stated.

This meeting marks a significant step in resolving disputes and ensuring that muguka farmers and traders are not subjected to conflicting regulations. The President's intervention is expected to bring much-needed clarity and stability to the industry, promoting economic growth and safeguarding the interests of those involved in the muguka trade.

Local leaders were grateful to President Ruto for his decisive action and commitment to upholding the law. They highlighted the importance of muguka to the regional economy and the livelihoods of countless families.

As the government moves forward with this clear stance, stakeholders in the muguka industry can continue their activities with the assurance that their efforts are legally supported. The President's statement serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to national legislation and the role of the government in protecting the rights and interests of its citizens.
