Race for Deputy Inspector General Heats Up As NPSC Shortlists 8 Top Candidates.

On Thursday, July 18, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) initiated the shortlisting process for candidates vying for the prestigious positions of Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS) and Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police Service (DIG-APS). This selection process comes on the heels of significant leadership changes within the Kenya Police Service.

The vacancies emerged following President William Ruto's recent appointments. Douglas Kanja, previously DIG-KPS, has been appointed as the acting Inspector General of Police, succeeding Japheth Koome, who resigned. Concurrently, Noor Gabow, former Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service, has been reassigned within the Public Service.

Acknowledging the urgency of these appointments, the Commission has opted for temporary acting positions to be filled within 14 days, during which the competitive selection process will be finalized.

Among the distinguished candidates shortlisted for the DIG-KPS role are George Adero Sedah, Eliud Kipkoech Lagat, Tom Mboya Odero, and Dr. Vincent Kinas Makokhan. These candidates are scheduled for interviews on Monday, July 22, 2024, starting at 9:30 am at the Kenya School of Government, Lower Kabete Campus. Following the DIG-KPS interviews, the candidates for DIG-APS will undergo their interviews from 2:00 pm to 4:15 pm.

The rigorous selection process follows an overwhelming response to the Commission’s call for applications, with 38 individuals applying for the two positions—21 for DIG-KPS and 13 for DIG-APS.

As NPSC Chairman Eliud Kinuthia remarked,

“This selection process is a critical step in ensuring that our police service is led by individuals of integrity, competence, and dedication. We are committed to transparency and fairness in choosing the best candidates for these vital roles.”

The outcomes of these interviews will play a significant role in shaping the future of Kenya’s police service, ensuring that leadership is in place to uphold law and order across the nation.
