In Awendo town, Migori County, residents of the Jiw-Dendi slum are voicing concerns over the potential impact of a major road upgrade project. The initiative, funded by the World Bank, aims to tarmac roads within the area, but locals worry that the expansion might encroach on their homes and other structures.
Johnson Owiro, a member of the Awendo municipality board responsible for town planning, revealed that some buildings now fall within the expanded road reserves due to the project. Despite the residents’ support for the improvements, there are fears that necessary roadworks could force the demolition of their properties.
Owiro has attempted to communicate these concerns to the project implementers but reports that they have been unresponsive. The community remains hopeful that the project will enhance their living conditions without displacing them.
