Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has voiced strong opposition to a proposed salary increment for public officers, including Members of Parliament, citing the necessity for leaders' earnings to reflect the current economic challenges. Cheruiyot criticized the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for its silence during ongoing anti-government protests, urging for concrete steps to reduce the country's ballooning wage bill.
During a Senate address, Cheruiyot emphasized the need for pay cuts and highlighted discussions among senators to address national issues and propose viable solutions. He underscored the urgency for leadership accountability amidst public scrutiny over economic management, stating, "We must reject any salary increment in light of our financial situation."
Cheruiyot's remarks come amid heightened public discontent and calls for austerity measures, reflecting broader concerns over economic policy and governance in Kenya.
