In the ongoing investigation into the Shakahola tragedy, two more bodies were exhumed on Wednesday, bringing the total number of bodies recovered in the fifth phase of the exhumation exercise to 21. This raises the overall death toll to a staggering 450.
The current phase of exhumation, which began last Monday, has seen over 30 graves unearthed. At the Malindi morgue, 32 bodies have been positively identified through DNA testing. However, families awaiting closure may have to endure additional delays, as the government has decided to extend the exhumation efforts.
Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor emphasized that the investigation is being conducted meticulously, with autopsy reports being prepared to ensure thoroughness and accuracy.
Last week, homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified 50 additional graves near the sites where 429 bodies were previously discovered. These new graves will be the primary focus in the ongoing search.
The bodies are believed to be followers of Pastor Paul Mackenzie of the Good News International Church. Mackenzie, who was arrested in April last year, stands accused of promoting a deadly religious doctrine that encouraged his followers to fast to death.
Mackenzie, along with 94 co-accused individuals, remains in custody facing a litany of charges, including murder, manslaughter, and child torture, all related to the horrific events in Shakahola.
As the exhumation and identification process continues, authorities are committed to uncovering the full extent of this tragedy and ensuring that justice is served for the victims and their families.
