Shake-Up in Tanzanian Cabinet: President Hassan Fires Senior Ministers Ahead of 2025 Elections

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has dismissed two senior ministers, including the head of the foreign ministry, in a mini-cabinet reshuffle. This move, announced late Sunday, comes as the nation gears up for its national elections next year.

The presidency's statement revealed that "Mahmoud Thabit Kombo has been appointed a member of parliament and the new minister for foreign affairs and East African cooperation to replace January Makamba, whose appointment is revoked." The statement did not provide reasons for the dismissals.

Jerry Silaa, previously in charge of Lands, Housing, and Settlement Development, will replace Nape Nnauye as Minister for Information, Communications, and IT. This change follows a viral video that featured Nnauye saying, "Winning in elections is not always determined by the number of votes in the ballot box but depends on who counts and announces the results." The clip sparked widespread criticism from both opposition and ruling party members.

Nnauye apologized, claiming his comments were intended as a joke and had been taken out of context. Nevertheless, opposition politician John Mnyika remarked that the statement "indicates what has been planned within the government and the ruling party."

Analysts are now speculating about the implications of this reshuffle for the 2025 elections, in which Hassan is expected to be a candidate. University of Dar es Salaam lecturer Abel Kinyondo commented, "I think it's a power play towards the general election next year."

President Hassan, who assumed office in 2021 following the death of her predecessor John Magufuli, has been steering the country away from Magafuli's authoritarian policies. Her administration has introduced political reforms, easing some restrictions on the media and the opposition. This latest cabinet reshuffle may be part of her broader strategy as she prepares for the upcoming electoral battle.
