Super Spain going roaring to quarter finals after they came from behind to beat Georgia 4-1, maintaining their perfect record against the Crusaders despite a determined display from the tournament’s plucky underdogs.
La Roja, who had won both head-to-head matches in qualifying by an aggregate scoreline of 10-2, looked dominant as the action kicked off in Cologne. However, they faced a formidable opponent in Giorgi Mamardashvili, the goalkeeper who finished fourth in La Liga for clean sheets this season. Mamardashvili continued his impressive form, denying Pedri and Robin Le Normand, with the Georgian defense putting their bodies on the line.
Despite the early Spanish onslaught, Georgia stunned their illustrious opponents in the 18th minute. Their first notable attack saw Otar Kakabadze’s cross bounce in off Le Normand. Georgia, led by coach Willy Sagnol, continued to press forward whenever possible, but the Spanish pressure intensified, with Mamardashvili denying Fabián Ruiz, Marc Cucurella, and Nico Williams.
Spain's persistence paid off in the 39th minute when Rodri produced a lovely touch and pinpoint finish from the edge of the box. The situation worsened for Georgia as Otar Kiteishvili was forced off injured. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia came close to restoring Georgia’s lead with an audacious attempt from inside his half shortly after the restart.
Spain took the lead when Mamardashvili saved Lamine Yamal’s free-kick, but Fabián headed home from the 16-year-old’s delightful cross. While Yamal couldn’t capitalize on a wayward pass from Giorgi Kochorashvili, Spain largely controlled the game. Giorgi Gvelesiani’s blushes were spared when Yamal was caught marginally offside before squaring a ball he bundled in, but nothing could save the defender moments later when Williams glided past him and struck past Mamardashvili. Dani Olmo added an extra layer of gloss to the scoreline with a wonderful touch and cool finish.
Spain's victory ensures they remain the only team to have won all their games at Euro 2024, setting up a tantalizing quarter-final clash against hosts Germany.
Despite the loss, Georgia played valiantly throughout the tournament and can head home with pride.
