The Senate will meet on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, to consider the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. This follows the National Assembly's decisive vote on Tuesday, where 281 MPs supported the motion, citing gross violations of the Constitution, undermining President William Ruto, incitement, and economic crimes. Gachagua faces 11 charges, including compromising judicial independence and making divisive statements.
The Senate may form a special committee to investigate the charges, and if two-thirds of senators vote in favor, Gachagua will be removed from office. The outcome could reshape Kenya's political landscape.
