Whitman's resignation comes on the heels of a major political shift in the United States, with Donald Trump’s victory in the recent elections, signaling a new direction for U.S. foreign policy. In her statement, Whitman expressed deep gratitude for the honor of representing the United States in Kenya and highlighted the positive impact of her tenure.

A Legacy of Partnership

In her resignation announcement, Whitman took time to reflect on the meaningful progress made during her time as Ambassador. From aiding in disaster relief efforts to addressing public health challenges, Whitman’s leadership brought tangible benefits to both nations.

"Serving as the U.S. Ambassador has been an honor and privilege. Through our partnership, we've not only responded to emergencies but also created lasting change for the betterment of both our nations," she remarked.

One of the standout achievements of Whitman’s tenure was the swift response to catastrophic flooding in 2023, with emergency funding from the U.S. helping to alleviate the damage. Her leadership also extended to public health issues, where she praised ongoing efforts in the fight against malaria, HIV, and MPOX in Kenya.

A Focus on Economic Development

Whitman’s efforts also focused on building stronger economic ties between the U.S. and Kenya. Her 2022 “Why Africa, Why Kenya?” initiative aimed at connecting American businesses with opportunities in Kenya has borne fruit, with trade and investment reaching historic highs.

"The trade, job creation, and U.S. investment we’ve seen during my time here are a direct result of our efforts to expand these relationships," Whitman stated, highlighting her key focus on fostering economic growth. Her tenure saw the U.S. embassy facilitating improved consular services, with wait times for non-immigrant visa appointments being reduced from over two years to just two months.

Confidence in Continued Success

As she prepares to depart, Whitman expressed confidence that the U.S.-Kenya partnership will continue to thrive. With 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, she remains optimistic that the trajectory of mutual cooperation will only strengthen in the years to come.

“My departure is filled with gratitude for the incredible team that worked alongside me, for the friendship and partnership extended by Kenya’s government and people, and for the opportunity to have made a meaningful impact,” Whitman shared.

With her resignation now official, Ambassador Whitman leaves behind a legacy of dedication, collaboration, and tangible progress in U.S.-Kenya relations. As both countries look toward the future, the foundation she helped build will undoubtedly continue to shape diplomatic ties for years to come.
