Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei Dies: Athlete’s Death Sparks Outcry Over Gender-Based Violence

Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei tragically passed away on Thursday at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret, after suffering severe burns in a brutal domestic violence attack allegedly orchestrated by her estranged boyfriend. The long-distance runner, who recently competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, sustained 80% burns when her boyfriend poured petrol on her and set her ablaze during a dispute over land ownership.

Cheptegei, a rising star in Ugandan athletics, had just returned from competing on the world stage. Her death has sent shockwaves through the international sports community, as well as reignited conversations about the alarming rates of gender-based violence in East Africa.

The attack reportedly took place on Sunday after a heated argument between Cheptegei and her boyfriend over the ownership of the land where they lived. According to Trans Nzoia Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Koisiom, the assailant purchased petrol, doused Cheptegei, and ignited it. The boyfriend also sustained burns and is currently under police investigation.

At the scene, authorities recovered a five-liter jerrican of petrol and a mobile phone belonging to the boyfriend. Investigations are ongoing.

Uganda's Athletics Federation released a statement condemning the violence, saying, "We regret to announce the loss of our beloved athlete Rebecca Cheptegei. We call for swift justice and stand in solidarity against the violence that took her life."

The federation, along with sports organizations and human rights groups, is calling for a deeper investigation and stronger measures to protect women, especially those in the public eye, from domestic violence.

Cheptegei’s death comes as a grim reminder of the pervasive issue of violence against women in East Africa, where cultural and societal factors often hinder justice. Her tragic demise also marks a growing trend of athletes in the region facing personal and professional challenges due to violence and exploitation.
