Public universities will resume operations after UASU and KUSU called off their strike following successful negotiations with the government. The two-week industrial action, which began on September 18, was resolved after an inter-ministerial committee chaired by Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua agreed to key demands.
The deal includes a 7% salary increase for lecturers in Grades 13A-15A and 10% for Grades 10A-12A, with immediate effect. Further talks will be held on September 27 to review salary scales for 2023/2025. Additionally, lecturers and universities will collaborate to recover lost learning time, ensuring minimal academic disruption. The unions also secured guarantees that no disciplinary action will be taken against any staff who participated in the strike.
