US Embassy Issues Urgent Demonstration Alert to Citizens in Kenya Amid Planned Protests

An urgent demonstration alert has been released by the United States Embassy in Kenya for its citizens in anticipation of scheduled protests on Thursday, July 11. Despite President William Ruto's appeal for dialogue with disgruntled Kenyans, demonstrations are anticipated in various cities throughout the nation.

Intelligence reports indicate that certain protestors intend to obstruct main roads, prompting worries about possible violence and substantial traffic disturbances. The Embassy has advised US citizens that even apparently peaceful protests could escalate into violence unexpectedly, leading to traffic disruptions and delays.

In light of these developments, the US Embassy has advised American citizens to monitor local media for updates on highway and road conditions before traveling. They have also recommended avoiding crowds, keeping vehicle doors locked, and windows rolled up. Additionally, citizens are urged to notify friends and family of their whereabouts and safety.

"Notify friends and family of your whereabouts and safety," the advisory stated, emphasizing the importance of staying informed and taking precautions.

While President Ruto has assured all Kenyan residents of their security during the demonstrations, the US Embassy underscored the need for its citizens to review their personal security plans. The Embassy also advised carrying a copy of their US passport along with their current Kenyan visa.

The alert comes amid a broader international concern, with countries including Australia, Russia, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom also warning their citizens about the potential risks associated with the demonstrations in Kenya.

The protests, which began in June as opposition to the Finance Bill 2024, have since evolved into a widespread expression of dissatisfaction with the current political leadership. Despite calls for dialogue, the persistence of anti-government sentiments has kept the protest momentum alive.

As Kenya braces for these significant demonstrations, the US Embassy's alert serves as a crucial reminder for citizens to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety. The situation remains fluid, and travelers are advised to stay informed through reliable sources as events unfold.
