Argentina Clinches Quarter-Final Spot with Dominant Win Over Peru at 2024 Copa América, 2-0 win

In a display of depth and resilience, Argentina secured their place in the 2024 Copa América quarter-finals with a commanding 2-0 victory over Peru at the Hard Rock Stadium. This win not only maintained Argentina's perfect record in the tournament but also marked Peru's first group-stage exit in 29 years, underscoring the high stakes and intense competition.

With the quarter-final berth already secured, Argentina's assistant coach Walter Samuel, stepping in for the suspended Lionel Scaloni, made nine changes to the starting lineup. Notably absent was talisman Lionel Messi, who is nursing a hamstring issue. Despite the changes, Argentina's intent was evident from the outset, dominating possession and pressing high against a determined Peruvian side.

The breakthrough came from a set-piece just before the half-hour mark. Leandro Paredes, showcasing his precision, curled a free-kick over the wall, only to be denied by a stunning save from Peru’s veteran goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. Gallese, a standout performer, kept Peru in contention with another crucial save from Giovani Lo Celso's effort late in the first half.

Peru, aware of the uphill battle ahead, managed to hold Argentina scoreless at halftime. However, their resolve was shattered just two minutes into the second half. Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez, continuing his remarkable form, expertly lifted Angel Di Maria's exquisite pass over the onrushing Gallese, marking his fourth consecutive international appearance with a goal.

Argentina's dominance was briefly interrupted when Nicolas Tagliafico's goal from a corner was ruled out for offside. The frustrations mounted when Paredes' penalty struck the post in the 71st minute. Yet, Lautaro Martinez ensured a decisive victory with another delicate chip, securing his brace and solidifying Argentina's eighth consecutive win.

As the world champions march into the quarter-finals, their impressive form and tactical depth signal a serious bid for the title. With Lionel Messi expected to return, Argentina’s prospects look even brighter, promising thrilling encounters ahead in the tournament.
